I read Dungeon Tales II by Venita Coelho a few months ago, and I was hoping to get my copy autographed at Kukdukoo in March. Sadly, the autograph is still pending. But the stories stayed with me and we’re going to be reading some of them at my book club soon.
This is the first collection of short stories I’ll be reading with my nine- and ten-year-olds, and I wonder why I’ve never selected short stories before. Especially as we read just excerpts in class, I’m sure they will work very well! We’ll read just three together; the rest are for the children to explore by themselves. Here’s what we’ll do!
I loved Roman numerals as a child, and I always waited for the chance to use them. Letters that are actually numbers? Fascinating!
We’ll look at numbers, why the introduction of zero was important, and see how difficult it is to add XCIV and VI, for instance, while 94 + 6 is as easy as it gets!

How can I read a story about the Badmash Badshah and not encourage the children to play with alliteration? Huge Horribleness, Rudimentary Rottenness, Wonderful Wickedness … What else?
