Writing Nonfiction

October 23, 2021, 4:30 pm - 5:30 pm

₹400

With each writing programme I conduct, I try to organise three guest sessions with experts in various fields. The first one will be conducted by Dr Shayani Bhattacharya. Shayani is an Assistant Professor at Lebanon Valley College, Pennsylvania, where she teaches stories from around the world, fairy tales, science-fiction, tales of monsters, scriptwriting, and film. Her manuscript Memory in Absentia examines untold stories and memories of marginalised groups. Her recent scholarship is focused on the ways in which Speculative Science Fiction reshapes narrative form and recorded memory.

Writing nonfiction usually involves a certain amount of research, whether we’re writing book reviews or travelogues. Does research have to be daunting and dull? What kind of research is required when we create brochures or photo essays? What do we need to do to prepare for an interview?

These were the questions I had in mind when I invited Shayani to come talk to us. Among other things, we will:

  • discuss what research entails, and how crucial and fun it is
  • do a Thought Cloud exercise where students generate topics for research
  • spend some time researching a topic they choose
  • talk about the different forms where we can use the research – travelogue, brochure, photo essay, interview

As this is a guest session at my writing programme, participants who are part of my current batches will be part of it at no additional cost. However, this session is also open to non-participants on payment of a fee.
