Purple Sea and Pink Sky, Nothing in Art Is a Lie

June 15, 2023, 5:00 pm - 6:00 pm

₹400

Art and writing go together. They are ways of expressing ourselves, and that is why I often try to organise an art session of some sort during my creative writing programme. In the past, we’ve had an illustration workshop, the art of zine-making, and a comic making workshop.

This time, we’re going to dive into art in a different way altogether with children’s book illustrator and art educator, Kripa. This Mumbai-based artist took up teaching Art and Design after completing Fine Art from Sir JJ School of Art. She has been an Art educator for over 17 years, and worked with institutions like Srishti School of Art, Design and Technology. In most of her books, city and art have been recurring themes as she is working on representing urban realism thus enabling children to view their cities with new perspectives. Kripa’s characters are real people derived from her association with the grassroots. Her art is rooted in her engagement with her city Mumbai, its children, people and their problems. Two of her books have featured in the Parag Honour list in 2019 and 2021. Her latest picture book biography on Somnath Hore has won the IPPY award for best interactive book design 2021.

About the Workshop

Can the sea be purple? Can the sky be pink? Can you paint a landscape with one colour? Can you paint an egg without using the colour white, without leaving any part of the page unpainted?

Learn sea painting techniques.
Learn to use your brush – dab, sweep, dribble, stroke.
Learn to mix media – overlapping, layering and texturing.

And finally, let’s discover together that nothing in art is a lie!

As this is a guest session at my online creative writing programme, it is free for my current participants. However, it is also open to non-participants on payment of a fee.
