Non-Boring Nonfiction

May 6, 2023, 6:30 pm - 7:30 pm

₹400

At the beginning of a module on writing nonfiction, I often ask participants what words come to mind when they think of nonfiction. Here are some of the standard responses: boringgrown-upyawninglong

That is why it was the perfect time to invite Vaishali Shroff to conduct a session on Non-Boring Nonfiction! Vaishali is an award-winning author, script writer, and columnist based in Mumbai. She has published over 250 stories, fiction and nonfiction, in books, magazines, newspapers, and digital media, with Indian and international publishers—Penguin, Harper, Oxford, Westland, Tulika, Pratham, Eklavya, Mango DC, Daffodil Lane Books, Art1st, among others. She loves writing about unexplored places, untold histories, giving agency to voiceless nonhumans. From exploring our rather unknown and neglected fossil heritage (The Adventures of Padma and a Blue Dinosaur) to our Portuguese history (Batata, Pao and All Things Portuguese) to our dying linguistic diversity (Taatung Tatung), to biographies of renowned Indian artists (Breaking Moulds), and told with interesting perspectives and narratives, Shroff’s repertoire of nonfiction works addresses many gaps in children’s literature.

About the Workshop

Nonfiction is all around us, at home and at school. Although we may think of it as boring, let’s explore why it is anything but! Even a seemingly boring topic can become exciting, as you will discover through a few short, snappy writing exercises with award-winning author Vaishali Shroff.

During the session, we will understand what nonfiction is, where we can find inspiration, and how we can make it fun.

As this is a guest session at my online creative writing programme, it is free for my current participants. However, it is also open to non-participants on payment of a fee.
